Lucasfilm’s Habitat
January 11, 2009 on 9:51 pm | In Technology, Internet | Comments OffLucasfilm’s Habitat from 1988 was an early experiment in creating an online social world. However, it turned out the program may have been ahead of its time, at least technology-wise. According to the book Rogue Leaders on the history of Lucasfilm games, the 500 users of the prototype ate up a full 1% of the system resources of partnering online provider QuantumLink. Consequently – though the project was later licensed to others and also spun off successors and might have influenced reminiscent projects – the US release of Habitat was canceled.

Google’s New Favicon (Again)
January 9, 2009 on 7:04 pm | In Technology, Internet, Google, Search | Comments Off![]()
Google changed their favicon once more (the last change happened in May 2008). Above you can see the recent history of this icon showing in the address bar and elsewhere. The new design consists of four color areas – blue, red, green and yellow – overlaid by a lowercase white “g”.

Google Chrome Update With Form Auto-Completion And More
January 9, 2009 on 1:20 am | In Technology, Internet, Google, Search | Comments Off
The latest preview version of Google Chrome features a couple of additions, Google announced, including:
- CSS gradients, CSS canvas drawing, reflections and masks
- form auto-completion
- a full-page zoom when you use the Ctrl-Plus/ Ctrl-Minus shortcuts, as opposed to just increasing the font size
- more spellchecking customization options
When I tried this version, it messed with my Windows task bar visibility, and also distorted this blog’s layout, so for serious usage I’d have to go back to an older version.
If you want to try out the preview, you need to:
- Install Chrome if you haven’t already, then run Chrome’s channel switcher executable (Google suggests to make a backup first)
- Check the Developer channel option and save your settings
- Start Chrome and pick
-> About Google Chrome, then hit the Update Now button - Restart all Chrome windows

Is Dell Buying Text Links?
January 8, 2009 on 2:40 pm | In Technology, Internet, Google, Search | Comments OffIs computer seller Dell buying text links ads, those non-nofollowed paid links which also happen to go against the Google webmaster guidelines? For instance, the following bit can be seen on the PageRank 6 OpenSourceTemplates.org:

The respective HTML for this portion (I added a line break and omitted some lines):
<h5>Sponsorship Friends</h5>
...
<a href="http://www.dell.com/business/servers">
business servers</a>
...Similar non-nofollowed links with the keyword "server" or related phrasings can be seen in the ad sections of other sites, including ILoveTypography.com, MovableStyle.com, Internet101.org and Oggix.com (at least these always look like ad sections, though they're often undisclosed under headings like "Unrelated", "Featured" or "Recommended"). The Yahoo site explorer lists more, as Yv, who pointed this out in the forum, explains.
The other ad links surrounding the Dell link point to a variety of things, often unrelated to the site showing the ad, like "Alcohol Rehab Programs", "Web Hosting", "New Cars", "Flash Memory", "Free Games", "Online Sweepstakes", "Wholesale Cell Phones" and so on. Here's another example, this one from PictoGame.com:

However, by itself that's no proof yet that Dell is buying these links; anyone could point to Dell.com in a paid links section of course, like someone who'd want to maliciously hurt Dell's image or ranking. Currently, Dell's PageRank 6 servers page ranks in near the top of result page #2 for the keyword "servers" in Google when I try it (but results may vary for others); there's also Dell AdWords showing for that search.
[Thanks Yv!]
